Considered the mirror of the soul and the life of the face, the eyes suffer from the first signs of aging, from the age of 30, giving the face a tired and sad look. Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery is the weapon we have to erase and correct these signs.
Plastic Surgeon Rodrigo Mangaravite explains that in blepharoplasty the excess skin and the fat bags that give a tired and aged air to the look are removed. The procedure can be done on the upper or lower eyelid, with local anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation.
In some people, the passing of the years causes the lateral corner of the eyes to fall, exposing the conjunctiva – the white area of the eyes below the iris -, aggravating the appearance of aging. The problem can be solved with the cantopexia or cantoplasty, technique that repositions the lateral corner through a point of fixation in the bones around the eyes.
The surgery of the eyelids rejuvenates the face, taking away the sensation of weight and tiredness of the eyelids, leaving the eyes with a cleaner aspect.
According to Dr. Rodrigo Mangaravite blepharoplasty is indicated for patients with excess skin and / or fat on the eyelids, in which the skin of the upper eyelids becomes flaccid and falls, hindering the vision. The procedure is also used in cases where the fat pockets in the upper and lower eyelids begin to become visible because of sagging skin.
Generally, eyelid surgery is done under local anesthesia, with prior sedation. But it can be performed under general anesthesia at the patient’s request or doctor’s appointment.
Usually blepharoplasty lasts for about an hour and a half. It is worth mentioning that Dr. Rodrigo performs all his surgeries with all possible attention and calmness. Following an individualized surgical plan minutely for each patient, using all their technical capacity and resources to arrive at the best possible result, and only then, the surgery can be finished. Dr. Rodrigo only leaves the surgical center when he is sure that he has reached the maximum, the desired result.
The edema or swelling varies from patient to patient and may be more intense within the first four days after blepharoplasty, disappearing almost completely two months after the operation. With normal postoperative evolution, the patient can return to normal activities between four and seven days.
It is recommended to use compresses with cold boricated water or saline for several minutes, several times a day. Some surgeons prefer occlusion of the eyes with tampon. Among special care after blepharoplasty, avoid hot baths, sun and heat, which favor the appearance of edema and ecchymosis. Do not scratch the eyes. Do not read or watch television in the first 24 hours. Always keep your head elevated.
According to plastic surgeon Rodrigo Mangaravite the scars of the eyelid surgery are disguised by the furrows. They pretty much disappear in three months. In the lower eyelid, the fat pockets can be eliminated transconjunctivally, without external scars.
